The Gramma Dorothy Cookbook
Some years ago, my niece Jaime had the brilliant idea to compile all of my mother’s (Gramma Dorothy) recipes into book format. The resulting “Gramma Dorothy Cookbook” was a fitting tribute. The recipes, some old and some new, brought back many memories for me and captured the essence of family. Now, I have converted these recipes into digital format and posted them on this site for all to see. Since I have not yet tried these recipes, consider them untested.

Easy Penuche Icing
This recipe dates back to Gramma’s high school days in Home Economics in 1931 or 1932. She learned how to make white sauce, “blemage,” (a white, bland custard), fudge and penuche frosting. The other subject was sewing. Easy Penuche Icing 1/4 cup butter 1/2 cup brown sugar (packed) 2 tablespoons milk 1 cup confectioner’s sugar […]
Fancy Egg Scramble
Steve Casper’s Christmas Brunch Staple, late 1970?s. Fancy Egg Scramble 1 cup Canadian bacon (diced) 1/4 cup green onion (chopped) 3 tablespoons butter or margarine 12 eggs (beaten) 1 3 ounce can mushroom stems and pieces (drained) 1 recipe Cheese sauce (following) 4 teaspoons butter or margarine (melted) 2 1/4 cups soft bread crumbs ((about […]
Sugar Cookie All-Purpose Frosting
This frosting is used to decorate all of Gramma’s sugar cookies. She has a system for decorating each kind of cookie … for example, the birds always are blue with yellow beaks, and so on. One Christmas in Sequim when she broke her arm and couldn’t decorate them, the Santas came out psychedelic purple and […]
Basic Pie Crust
I remember Gramma making pies at her apartment on Rose Street, and telling me, “When I was a girl, I used to watch my gramma make pies, and she would crimp the edges so fast you couldn’t see her hands moving.” –Jaime Basic Pie Crust 2 cups flour (sifted) 1 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup shortening […]
Fudge

Cook without stirring until reaches 235 degrees (forms a soft ball when dropped in water). Remove from heat, add butter […]
Gramma’s Meatloaf
The secret is to form a free-standing loaf so that a large surface area is exposed. I’m not a big fan of ketchup on meat loaf, but you can certainly add up to 1/2 cup if you want. Gramma’s Meatloaf Prep Time 20 minutes Cook Time 45 minutes Total Time 1 hour 5 minutes Servings […]
San Francisco Stew
More of a casserole, this dish was what my Gramma would frequently make during our non-holiday get togethers. The brown sugar and bacon on top made it really appealing to my sister and I, because as you know, everything is better with bacon!
Carrot Cake Frosting
This is a change of pace from the ubiquitous cream cheese frosting. More like a glaze, the buttermilk adds a little tanginess, Carrot Cake Frosting 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup buttermilk 1/2 cup butter 1 tablespoon corn syrup 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon vanilla Boil all ingredients together for five minutes, stirring constantly. Poke […]
