The Gramma Dorothy Cookbook
Some years ago, my niece Jaime had the brilliant idea to compile all of my mother’s (Gramma Dorothy) recipes into book format. The resulting “Gramma Dorothy Cookbook” was a fitting tribute. The recipes, some old and some new, brought back many memories for me and captured the essence of family. Now, I have converted these recipes into digital format and posted them on this site for all to see. Since I have not yet tried these recipes, consider them untested.

Easy Penuche Icing
This recipe dates back to Gramma’s high school days in Home Economics in 1931 or 1932. She learned how to make white sauce, “blemage,” (a white, bland custard), fudge and penuche frosting. The other subject was sewing. Easy Penuche Icing 1/4 cup butter 1/2 cup brown sugar (packed) 2 tablespoons milk 1 cup confectioner’s sugar […]

Gramma’s Meatloaf
The secret is to form a free-standing loaf so that a large surface area is exposed. I’m not a big fan of ketchup on meat loaf, but you can certainly add up to 1/2 cup if you want. Gramma’s Meatloaf Prep Time 20 minutes Cook Time 45 minutes Total Time 1 hour 5 minutes Servings […]

San Francisco Stew
More of a casserole, this dish was what my Gramma would frequently make during our non-holiday get togethers. The brown sugar and bacon on top made it really appealing to my sister and I, because as you know, everything is better with bacon!

Carrot Cake Frosting
This is a change of pace from the ubiquitous cream cheese frosting. More like a glaze, the buttermilk adds a little tanginess, Carrot Cake Frosting 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup buttermilk 1/2 cup butter 1 tablespoon corn syrup 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon vanilla Boil all ingredients together for five minutes, stirring constantly. Poke […]
